SHAW : LEICESTER WINNER IS MY BEST FEELINGS YET
SHAW : LEICESTER WINNER IS MY BEST
FEELINGS YET.
Luke Shaw is determined to contribute more to the
Manchester United cause after scoring the decisive goal in the season-opening
victory over Leicester City.
The defender, on the back of a positive pre-season,
netted the first goal of his senior career late on to ensure the Reds made a
winning start to the Premier League campaign with a 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford
on Friday night.
Luke couldn’t hide his emotions when speaking to
MUTV’s Stewart Gardner after the game and described the moment he celebrated in
front of the Stretford End as the best feeling he’s experienced so far in his
career.
“For me, today, for my career so far, it was the
best feeling I’ve felt,” the left-back said. “I was quick to react from my
touch, got round him [Ricardo Pereira], swung my foot at it and it just sort of
connected right and went into the bottom corner. From there, I just went and
celebrated.
“Honestly I can’t describe it, in front of the
Stretford End, it’s the best feeling I’ve had. I’m so proud and happy to be
able to help the team. Hopefully I made my family proud tonight too with my
first goal and hopefully I can push on forward and get many more and help the
team out more.”
Shaw’s tidy finish beyond Foxes keeper Kasper
Schmeichel in the 83rd minute settled a pulsating 2018/19 Premier League season
opener in United’s favour and was the full-back’s first goal in his 134th game
in professional football, for either the Reds or Southampton.
Asked to name the last time he found the net at any
level, Luke recalled: “Probably Under-18s maybe when I was playing on the
right-wing for Southampton! Actually, I think I scored one in pre-season with
Southampton now I think about it, but it doesn’t count really – not compared to
this!
“Like I said, amazing feeling but the hard work
doesn’t stop here. I keep pushing myself because I want to become better and
better and help the team out more.”
Shaw’s impressive outing against Leicester came on
the back of a positive pre-season, in which he featured in all six of United’s
matches. Although he felt he could have done better during the Reds’ warm-up
games, Luke is desperate to keep showing he is worthy of a regular place in
Jose Mourinho’s starting XI.
“For me, pre-season wise the minutes were the most
important thing. I was kind of disappointed with my performances in pre-season
– I don’t think I was what I can be and I still think I can be better than I
was tonight.
“But of course I’m very happy with how it started
and now I’ll just push on from here and hopefully make many more memories like
the ones tonight for me.”
